We look forward to welcoming you. The Cathedral is built on an Anglo-Saxon church by St Werburgh, later changed to a Benedictine Abbey in 1093. It was then finally converted to a cathedral in 1541 and still displays lots of its Victorian and Medieval history within the architecture. The Saxon church on this site was refounded as a Benedictine Abbey dedicated to St Werburgh in 1092. From 1260 to 1537 the Norman monastic buildings were gradually replaced by the great Gothic building, which became the Cathedral in 1541. The west front dates from the early 16th century, 2000 but like much of the Cathedral, was restored and embellished by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1868-76. The Roman amphitheatre in Chester, dating from the 1st century when the Roman fort of Deva Victrix was founded, is the largest uncovered in Britain. It hosted gladiatorial shows, animal fights, and executions. Rediscovered in 1929 during construction work, the amphitheatre underwent remodelling around 200 AD, with a 12-meter high outer wall, decorative façade, and internal staircases. Though it ceased to function as an amphitheatre after 350 AD, it may have later served as a stronghold. Today, about two-fifths of the site is visible, with artefacts from excavations displayed at the nearby Grosvenor Museum.

The Eastgate Clock is a prominent landmark in Chester, England. Originally built in 1899 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, the clock replaced a medieval gateway that once guarded the entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix. Its elegant sandstone base dates back to 1769, adding to the structure's historical significance. Chester Castle was rebuilt between 1788 and 1822 by an architect called Harrison during the Greek Revival Movement. The rebuilding of the medieval castle occupied Thomas Harrison for 40 years. From here you can see the central block with a pediment supported by twelve giant unfluted Doric columns. This housed the Shire Hall and assize Court with the County Gaol (demolished) behind. The two wings were for the Armoury and Barracks. The great entrance gateway, not completed until 1822, was said to have been inspired by the Propylaeum of the Acropolis in Athens. The Dee Bridge is dated between the 14th and 15th century, and was built to replace the wooden bridges which were destroyed consistently from flood and fires. Tolls were taken for passing until 1855.

Churchill house is now the Business school of the university of Chester. Formerly known as capital house, the building, designed in the Neo-Georgian style, was completed in 1938. It served as the Headquarters of Western Command during the Second World War and was visited by Prime Minister Winston Churchill, General Dwight D. Eisenhower and General Charles de Gaulle.

The Bear & Billet pub and restaurant welcomes you to the historic town of Chester. Located right inside Chester's city walls set in a Grade 1 listed black and white traditional half timbered building, dating all the way back to 1664. Known for their incredibly friendly welcome, sourced, good food and a wide range of ales and spirits The Bear & Billet is a firm Chester favourite. Dared 1664, this is one of the last major timber- framed houses to be built in Chester and probably the whole country, until the style was revived in the 19th century. It seems to have replaced an earlier house, destroyed in the 1640s, when Royalist Chester was attacked by Parliamentarians during the Civil War. Until 1867 it was owned by the Earls of Shrewsbury, who as custodians of the Bridgegate, had the right to control tolls in goods brought through the gate into the city. It became an inn in the late 18th century. Waymarker: “Old inn sign”.

Welcome From the front we are quite an imposing red brick building, but we are probably better reflected from the garden view of our pub which is a delight of higgledy-piggledy roof lines and soft, warm Cheshire common brick. We are a charming pub with well-spaced rooms, a beautiful garden room which fills with sunlight and leads onto a great outside terrace with a very pleasing garden, which in turn leads onto the village green. The locals are very fond of it as it's the perfect spot to watch the world go by. Our menus have their roots in modern British cooking, with a hint of the more exotic about them. They change often to reflect the seasons and are supported by a well-balanced wine list offering a good quality but affordable range and a well-stocked bar of local ales and interesting spirits. The Falcon is a famous Chester landmark, easy to find, being a striking half-timbered substantial building set on a large crossroads in the town centre. A traditional style pub in an impressive black and white building which is the surviving half of a Twelfth century mediaeval town house. Situated within the city walls on the edge of the main shopping area, it attracts a varied clientele. This is the surviving half of a much larger medieval town house which extended down Lower Bridge Street. Original 13th century timbers survive in the undercroft (now the beer cellar). In 1643 the Row was enclosed by Sir Richard Grosvenor. The stone Row piers and original late medieval shopfront are still visible inside. The Falcon was an inn from 1778 to 1878, when it was repaired by John Douglas and re- opened as a remperance house. It was restored in the 1980s and became a public house once again. Waymarker: Timber detail - "circles and squares".
